The Society of Friends of Education created the Rethymnon Archaeological Museum in 1887. The museum has been situated in the Pentagon bastion opposite Fortezza’s main gate since 1991, while the museum’s gift store is located in Lotzia. The museum houses artifacts from numerous ancient locations, caverns, and excavations around the Rethymnon Prefecture in Crete.
From the Late Neolithic and Proto-Minoan periods through the late Roman period, these artifacts have been discovered. Vessels, tools, figurines, coin collections, weapons, helmets, pottery, jewelry, marble sculptures, stele from ancient monuments, columns from temples, everyday things, and many more artifacts associated with life in ancient times are among the displays. The displays are organized by excavation location and chronologically.
