The Omalos plateau in Chania is 38 kilometers from Chania and is at a height of 1100 meters in the White Mountains. It covers 15 square kilometers and is mostly owned by the members of the Lakki Community.
During the failed revolution of 1886-1888, the Turks only managed to approach it twice, and only for a few days each time (the thousand-day revolution).
Omalos is the source of the famous revolutionary chant: When will it be clear, when will it be clear, when will it flare up, to take my rifle…to walk down to Omalos…
It has three entrances: one from the pits (poros), one from Sfakia (the woodshed where the famed Samaria Gorge begins), and one from Omalos.
