Visitors can choose from a variety of beaches along the sandy strip that runs along the north coast of Rethymno, Crete. The calm bay of Stavromenos, a golden beach 11 kilometers east of Rethymno Town, is one of them. The local bus from Rethymno to Stavromenos runs every half hour and takes you to the little settlement of Stavromenos. The beach is a 500-meter walk from the settlement.
Sunbathing parasols and sunbeds are available, and a climb up the steep slopes rewards you with a stunning view. A few traditional pubs along the shore provide delectable Cretan cuisine and local beverages. The settlement of Stavromenos features businesses and mini-markets dotting the streets.
During their nesting season, from May to September, sea turtles Carretta Carretta come to the shore at night.
During these days, a section of the beach may be closed to tourists to allow the loggerhead turtles to lay their eggs safely. Platenes, 4 km west of Adele beach, has water sports, discos, and nightclubs for the partygoers.
